First of all THANK YOU for choosing me to capture you and your baby during this amazing time in your family's life. Newborn photos and videos are my absolute favorite types of sessions. This digital welcome package was created just for you. I hope you'll find all the details you need to help you feel more at ease before your session. If you have any further questions or concerns, always feel free to reach out to me. I'm happy to chat as much as you need before your session.
FRESH 48 PHOTOGRAPHY + VIDEO
A fresh 48 session is essentially a newborn session that takes place during the 48 hours after a baby is born. This usually happens in the hospital, but it can also be at another location where the birth took place - at home or a birthing center, for example.
What to expect.
This is likely one of the most exciting, tiring, sweetest, and overall memorable times of your life. My goal is to capture this precious time in it's truest form. I photograph you and your baby just as you are - snuggling, swaddling, diaper changes, hospital bracelets, and all the spontaneous moments that happen along the way. These sessions are not overly posed or propped. I aim to capture authentic moments. I will direct you as needed, so don't worry about 'what to do'. This will be a special time to enjoy your precious new baby, and I'll take care of the rest.
Before the session.
I do my best to keep my schedule open the week around your due date. But we all know it's an unpredictable time. The best thing you can do is keep me updated on any progress with your labor as soon as it happens. Just send me a quick text if you go into labor (or have your husband ready to do it for you). Once you deliver, I'll be in touch over the next day or so to figure out how you're doing and when the best time will be for me to stop by. The morning hours are usually best, between 9am-12n, but afternoons are fine too. It's best if I can come during a time when you don't have any visitors expected. If you'd like to schedule during a time when your baby is meeting a new sibling or other family member for the first time, this is completely fine! Just let me know ahead of time and we'll make sure to schedule our session during that time.
How to prepare.
What to wear: some moms embrace the glow of new life and are photographed hours after giving birth, still in their hospital gowns. Other moms prefer to wait until discharge day, when they've had a chance to shower and change clothes. This is absolutely a personal decision. I recommend loose fitting, comfortable pants, and/or a comfy robe.
What should baby wear: feel free to bring any outfits, blankets, or accessories that you want. Or you don't have to bring anything at all. Again, this is all preference, and I'm happy to handle it for you or use something specific if you have it in mind. Simple newborn onesies are usually just fine. I will also spend some time getting the baby in just a diaper and swaddle blanket so we can capture all that precious newborn skin.
During the session.
How long will it take: I know just how exhausted you are, so I do my best to keep these sessions as quick and easy as possible. I usually have more than I need within an hour or less. If we are doing both a video and photography, it may take 1.5-2 hours, but usually no more than that.
What if baby gets hungry or we have an unexpected guest during the session? These things happen... a lot! Don't worry. I go with the flow. I always text when I'm headed towards the hospital - this is the perfect time to nurse your baby one last time before I arrive. If baby gets hungry again while I'm there, it's not a problem at all. We'll take a little break. If you have an unexpected guest or a nurse pops in to run a test, it's really no big deal. Sometimes these unexpected events can make for great photographs too.
After the session.
Sneak Peek: I absolutely love to share a few images within a day or so of your session via Instagram and Facebook. I find that many families are really excited to see a few of the best pictures and love to share them with their family and friends. This is, however, entirely up to you. If you're not comfortable with me sharing your photos or video, that's totally ok! There will be an option in your official contract where you can let me know what you prefer.
Digital Files: Within the next two weeks, I'll be working hard to edit each and every photo and curate your gallery. You'll have access to a private online gallery where you can see and download all your images. If you are purchasing a video, you'll receive a link to share with friends, as well as a USB drive.
IN-HOME NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY + VIDEO
You are going to be thrilled and exhausted. I know, because I've been there too. Having a new baby is one of the hardest, yet most rewarding things you'll ever do. My job is not to make this time in your life look perfect. My job is to show you how beautiful this time already is. I want you to be relaxed and at ease while I'm photographing your family. You don't need to be anything but yourself.
Before the session.
DATE & TIME
The best timing for in home newborn sessions is during the first two weeks after your baby is born. This gives you a little window of time to get settled in at home, but still capture the essence of your little newborn. Lighting inside is usually best in the morning or afternoon hours - between 10am-12n or 2-4pm. Let me know once you have your baby, and I'll be in touch to figure out the exact time/date of your session.
Newborn sessions are done inside your home. When I arrive, I'll take a quick tour around your home to find out where the best light/locations will be. I often use the living room sofa, master bedroom, and nursery. I know just how exhausting and stressful this time can be, so please do not clean or pick up a thing before I come. If anything needs to be straightened or organized, I'll take care of it before we start.
What to wear.
I find that light, neutral colors always look really nice in newborn photos. I shoot with a lot of natural light, which just feels soft and airy. What's most important is that you are comfortable. If you need any help or want a second opinion, I'm happy to take a look or chat about ideas before your session. For your baby - simple onesies are usually best. I will likely take it off at some point to capture some of that precious newborn skin, so plan to have a few swaddles or preferred blankets ready as well.
Day of the session.
BEFORE I ARRIVE
Give yourself plenty of time to shower and get ready before I arrive. I'll text you as I'm leaving and this will be a great time to feed your baby one last time before I'm there. If your baby needs to eat during our session, don't worry at all. We can take breaks as needed to make sure baby is happy. If you are using bottles, you may want to have one ready for dad to use as well. These are sometimes the sweetest photos.
MY SHOOTING STYLE
I want to capture your newborn just as he or she is. I find natural poses and actions to be the most beautiful and real representations of who you and your baby are during this amazing time. I may make some small adjustments as we go, but I don't overly prop or pose babies in an unnatural ways. If you're looking for lifestyle images, I'm your girl. I'll take a variety of shots with your family together, cuddling and enjoying this brand new life. I'll also take many with baby by his or herself, but I don't use props or backgrounds. I'm happy to give recommendations to some great newborn photographers in town who offer that style of photography. Don't worry about 'what to do' during our session. I will be sure to give you all the direction you need to make sure we are capturing great moments.
Don't worry if your baby is asleep or awake, happy or crying. This is not always something you can control. I recommend feeding your baby as much as he or she wants before the session. Newborn sessions can take some time, and it's no problem at all. We will do all we can to make baby happy as we go. These sessions can sometimes be done in an hour, but can also take several hours if baby needs to feed and take some breaks.
After the session.
I absolutely love to share a few images within a day or so of your session via Instagram and Facebook. I find that many families are really excited to see a few of the best pictures and love to share them with their family and friends. This is, however, entirely up to you. If you're not comfortable with me sharing your photos, that's totally ok! There will be an option in your official contract where you can let me know what you prefer.
Within the next two weeks, I'll be working hard to edit each and every photo and curate your gallery. You'll have access to a private online gallery where you can see and download all your images. I am happy to simply email you this link when your photos are ready, or I'd love to invite you to visit my studio in person. If you are thinking about hanging any of your gorgeous pictures on your walls (which I highly encourage) or even if you'd like a second opinion on frames, albums, etc. I'd love to help.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read through all this information. I hope it helps prepare you and put you at ease for your session. I'll be in touch within the next few days so we can schedule the date, time, and location of your session. Feel free to jot down any questions or concerns you may have so we can be sure to discuss them. Thanks again and I look forward to catching up soon!
