What is a fresh 48 session?
A fresh 48 session is a type of photography or videography session that takes place during the 48 hours after a baby is born. This usually happens in the hospital, but it can also be at another location where the birth took place - at home or a birthing center, for example. These are some of my most treasured types of sessions to shoot. I love getting to be present in the first moments when a baby is in its mother’s and father’s arms. There is something so precious and raw about those first few days and capturing it with a camera brings me such joy.
What to Expect
This is likely one of the most exciting, tiring, sweetest, and overall memorable times of your life. My goal is to capture this precious time in its truest form. That means I photograph you and your baby just as you are - snuggling, swaddling, changing diapers, wearing hospital bracelets, and all the spontaneous moments that happen along the way. This style of photography is often referred to as lifestyle photography. It aims to capture the real and authentic moments in a way that truly speaks to who you are. Fresh 48 sessions are perfect examples of lifestyle sessions. I typically will guide you along the way with small prompts as you need it - things like where to sit and what to do in a broad sense, but I don’t overly pose or correct at all. That is how we achieve natural and authentic images.
Families often try to time the photos so that an older sibling is there to meet the little one and take some new family photos together. I love this! We can absolutely schedule the photos to try and accommodate a spontaneous meeting. If you have additional family members that would like to be a part of the photos, they are welcome to join in the session as well. These are priceless and real moments that just cannot be reproduced.
It is also so important to capture all those tiny newborn fingers, toes, and wrinkles. Your baby will never be this small again and I don’t want you to forget any of the little details.
How to Prepare
What to wear? Some new moms embrace the glow of new life and are photographed hours after giving birth, still in their gowns. Other moms prefer to wait until discharge day, when they have had a chance to shower and change clothes. This is absolutely a personal decision and there is no wrong answer. It is most important for you to feel your best, so think about what would make you feel the most radiant and go with it.
How long will it take: I know just how exhausted you are, so I do my best to keep these sessions as quick and easy as possible. I usually have more than I need within about an hour or so. I go with the flow as nurses come in and out, baby needs to eat, surprise visitors, etc. so the time may vary in some cases.
Go ahead and contact me as soon as you can, so I can answer any more questions you may have. We can also go ahead and get a tentative date booked. I know births can be somewhat unpredictable, so I leave my schedule flexible during the 2-3 weeks around your due date. I keep in close contact leading up to that date, so there are (hopefully) no big surprises.
These are some of my absolute favorite sessions, and I am so looking forward to meeting you and sharing in this incredible time with you.
